K-Beauty Cleanser Minis for Japan/Taiwan Travel Gifts: What to Buy and What to Check

Buying a K-beauty cleanser as a gift or travel item on a trip to Japan or Taiwan comes down to two checks. One is whether a mini SKU of 100ml or less exists. The other is whether that container clears international carry-on liquid rules (100ml or less per container, one clear 1L zip bag per passenger). For some brands the mini is an official SKU sold on the brand's own site, while for others it only comes bundled with a set, so the way you buy a "mini" differs even when the label looks the same.

The 100ml carry-on rule is effectively the same in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan

On international flights departing Incheon Airport, only containers of 100ml or less can be carried on, and even if you bring several, the combined total must not exceed 1L, packed into one clear zip bag per passenger (20.5cm x 20.5cm or 15cm x 25cm). The rule is judged by the container's stated capacity, so even a 200ml container with only a small amount left inside is barred from carry-on.

Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism sets the identical international-flight rule: 100ml or less per container, 1L or less total, one zip bag per passenger. On Japanese domestic flights, however, this limit does not apply, and cosmetics can be carried on without a clear bag as long as each container holds 0.5kg or 0.5L or less, with a combined total of 2kg or 2L or less.

Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has applied the same figures since March 2007: 100ml or less per container, one 1L clear zip bag. All three follow International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) rules, which is why the numbers match. In short, when picking a cleanser mini, checking only "is it 100ml or less" covers the same rule on international flights in all three countries.

Anua Heartleaf Cleansing Foam150ml (only full size confirmed)Mildly acidic cleansing foamOnly the 150ml full size is listed on the official site (anua.kr); no 100ml-or-under mini was confirmedNot allowed (150ml, requires checked baggage)Since only the full size exists, it must go in checked baggage if bought as a gift
Manyo Factory Pure Cleansing Oil mini55mlOil cleanserNo standalone product page; confirmed only as a component of a Costco "200ml x 2 + 55ml" bundleAllowedYou can pack just the mini from inside the bundle separately
Senka Perfect Whip120g (only full size confirmed)Whipped foam cleanserFull size confirmed at Japanese drugstores; no dedicated mini or travel SKU confirmedNot allowed (120g, requires checked baggage)Widely available locally in Japan, but not suited to carry-on, so buy on the premise it goes in checked baggage

Even the same "mini" is bought differently

For bttr and PURE'AM, the minis have their own product pages on the official sites, so you can buy just the mini without a set. By contrast, round lab's 1025 Dokdo Toner mini (50ml) is not listed on the official site (roundlab.co.kr) in the 1025 Dokdo lineup, where only 200ml-and-up products appear; the 50ml size is sold only as part of a three-piece "toner + lotion + on-the-go" bundle. If your goal is to buy just the mini, you have to buy the whole bundle.

The same applies to Manyo Factory's 55ml Pure Cleansing Oil: no standalone sales page was confirmed, and its existence was verified only as a component of Costco's "200ml x 2 + 55ml" set. You have to buy the two full-size bottles together to get one mini included.

For Anua Heartleaf Cleansing Foam and Senka Perfect Whip, this research did not confirm the existence of any mini at 100ml or under. Anua's official cleansing category lists only the 150ml full size, and resellers (such as Wooricosme) carry a "travel cleansing set," but since the individual volumes are not listed on the product page, the volume cannot be confirmed here. For Senka Perfect Whip too, the only version commonly seen at Japanese drugstores is the 120g full size, and no separate travel SKU was confirmed. Since the full sizes of both products (150ml, 120g) exceed 100ml, they must be bought on the premise of checked baggage rather than carry-on.

Extra things to check when buying as a gift

  • Unopened status and manufacturing date: Cleansers tend to oxidize quickly once opened, so if buying as a gift, it is safer to check at the register that the packaging is sealed and to confirm the manufacturing date.
  • Duty-free purchases on the return flight follow a different exception: Liquids bought at Incheon Airport duty-free shops qualify for an exception to the 100ml limit if they are packed in a sealed tamper-evident bag (STEB) and left unopened until final boarding. However, if your itinerary involves a layover, the item may be opened and confiscated during re-screening at the transfer airport, so it is better not to rely on this exception when there is a layover.
  • Products over 100ml go in checked baggage: For full-size products with no confirmed mini, such as the 150ml Anua Heartleaf Cleansing Foam or the 120g Senka Perfect Whip, you need to pack them in checked baggage rather than carry them on if buying as a gift. Checked baggage has no liquid volume limit under Incheon Airport's rules.
